What does self-consumption mean with a PV system?
Self-consumption is the proportion of self-generated electricity that you use directly in your household - for example for household appliances, lighting, heating or charging your electric car. This electricity does not have to be purchased from the energy supplier and therefore does not incur any additional costs.
The calculation is simple:
Self-consumption = solar power generated - electricity fed into the grid
With a suitable inverter and a modern bidirectional meter, you can track how much electricity you generate, consume or feed into the grid at any time.
How high can my self-consumption be?
How much of your solar power you can use yourself essentially depends on the size of your photovoltaic system, your daily electricity consumption and the use of an electricity storage system.
Without a storage system, self-consumption averages 25 to 40 per cent. If a storage system is also integrated, values of 75 to 85 per cent or more are possible.
A practical example: A modern 10 kWp system in Germany generates between 9,000 and 11,000 kWh of electricity per year, depending on the location, roof orientation and solar radiation. A typical four-person household consumes around 4,500 kWh per year.
Around 3,500 to 4,000 kWh of this can be used directly by the household or with the help of a storage unit. The rest is fed into the grid or drawn from the storage system as required.
With or without storage - what's worth it?
An electricity storage system makes your photovoltaic system much more flexible and significantly increases your self-consumption. It stores the surplus electricity generated during the day and makes it available again at a later time - for example in the evening or when the sky is cloudy.
This allows you to use more of your self-generated electricity exactly when you need it. This not only reduces your electricity bill, but also increases your independence from the public grid.
Can I switch from full feed-in to self-consumption?
Yes, this is possible without any problems. Many households that previously relied on full feed-in have now switched to self-consumption - and benefit from significantly higher savings as a result. As a rule, all that is required is a suitable bidirectional meter. The inverter must also support self-consumption.
