Maximising energy from the sun

The efficiency of a photovoltaic system (PV system) is one of the most important factors when it comes to maximising the use of solar energy. A well-planned and professionally installed PV system can not only help to drastically reduce your energy costs, but also have a lasting impact on the environment. At greenmondi, we rely on state-of-the-art, efficient solar technologies that enable you to maximise the potential of the sun and thus create an independent and environmentally friendly energy future.

What does ‘efficiency’ mean for photovoltaic systems?

The efficiency of a photovoltaic system describes the proportion of solar energy that is converted into electrical energy by the solar modules. This conversion takes place through the so-called photovoltaic effect, in which light particles (photons) hit the solar cells and release electrons, which are then utilised as electricity. The efficiency of a solar module therefore indicates how much of the solar radiation hitting the module can actually be converted into electricity. Modern solar modules today achieve an efficiency of 18 to 22 %, which means that 18 to 22 % of the solar radiation is converted into usable electrical energy. The rest is lost as heat or is fed into other energy processes of the module. While high efficiency therefore means greater electricity generation for the same module area, other factors such as the area of the solar installation, the orientation and the geographical location are also decisive for the actual electricity production. Factors that influence the efficiency of photovoltaic systems Various factors influence the efficiency and therefore also the overall output of a photovoltaic system. Some of these factors can be controlled, others depend on external conditions:

1. Quality of the solar modules The efficiency of a PV system depends to a large extent on the quality of the solar modules used. Monocrystalline solar modules are considered to be the most efficient on the market. They have higher light absorption and convert more sunlight into electricity. In comparison, polycrystalline and thin-film modules are generally slightly less efficient, but also offer good performance at a lower price.
2. Geographical location and solar radiation The more hours of sunshine per year are available at your location, the more energy your PV system can generate. In regions with a lot of sunshine, such as southern Germany or southern countries, the yields are higher. In regions with less sunshine, the yields are lower, but even here considerable savings can still be achieved with well-positioned PV systems.
3. orientation and inclination of the solar modules In most cases, the optimum orientation of the solar modules is southwards, as this captures the most solar radiation throughout the day. The tilt of the modules also plays a role: an optimum angle to the sun ensures that the solar module absorbs the greatest possible amount of sunlight throughout the day. In many cases, an angle of between 30 and 40 degrees is chosen to ensure maximum efficiency.
4. temperature The efficiency of solar modules decreases with increasing temperature. Even if solar radiation is the main source of energy, the heat generated will also affect the performance of the modules. Therefore, in very hot regions, lower efficiency is often achieved than in temperate climates, even if there is more solar radiation.
5. maintenance and care Regular maintenance and cleaning of the solar modules ensures that they retain their maximum efficiency over the years. Dust, dirt or leaves on the modules can block the sun's rays and impair performance. Regular inspection and, if necessary, cleaning will ensure that the modules perform at their best and extend their service life.

How high is the output of an efficient PV system?

In sunny regions, a highly efficient PV system can generate between 800 and 1,200 kilowatt hours (kWh) per installed kilowatt peak (kWp), depending on the size and orientation of the modules. The term ‘kilowatt peak’ refers to the maximum output that a solar module can achieve under ideal conditions. This makes it easy to calculate how much electricity your PV system will generate each year. For example, a 10 kWp system could produce 8,000 to 12,000 kWh in a year - enough to cover the electricity needs of an average household. The advantages of an efficient photovoltaic system An efficient photovoltaic system offers numerous advantages, both from an ecological and an economic point of view:
1. reduced energy costs: the solar power generated can significantly reduce your energy costs. Especially if the PV system is operated in conjunction with an electricity storage system, you can also use the electricity produced at times when the sun is not shining. This minimises your dependence on electricity suppliers.

2. energy independence: A PV system gives you the opportunity to become independent of fluctuations on the electricity market. You can use self-generated electricity, which stabilises your long-term energy supply and protects you against rising energy prices.
3. sustainability and environmental protection: Solar power is a clean energy source that does not cause any CO2 emissions. An efficient PV system makes a significant contribution to reducing the CO2 footprint and helping to combat climate change. At greenmondi, we focus on sustainable solutions that not only optimise energy consumption, but also protect our environment.
4. feed-in tariffs and subsidies: In many countries, including Germany, there are state subsidies and feed-in tariffs for solar power. This means that you can receive remuneration for the surplus electricity that you feed into the public grid. This significantly increases the profitability of your PV system.
